is there any harm using vinegar to decalcify my cool mist humidifier?
I know there are many products on the market that will do this but I don’t have any handy and I really need to get my cool mister working again (had it going in my son’s room for last 5 days but now its not working – I know its our water). Just looking for a quick fix with what I have.
In fact I bought one over the winter and did exactly that before I put it away. The instructions that came with mine suggest I buy a calcification kit that the manufacturer makes (Vick’s) but the kit is like 15 bucks. So I called the customer care number to ask whether I can use vinegar, and they said yes. Just use a ratio of 4 to 1 (4 parts water to 1 part vinegar) then run the machine in a well ventilated room. Also, if you are noticing that it is spitting when it is running, empty out any residual water that sits in the pan beneath the water container. Turn the water reservoir upside down in the tub and take a toothbrush dipped in vinegar and clean the bottom part of the reservoir. Mine was disgusting with hard water crusties.
