May I use cellulose sponges as a substitute of a filter on a humidifier? The shape fits perfectly! xD?

Are there any down side of that subsitute? What does a filter really function as?
Cellulose is an organic substance that can support the growth of mildew, mold, and bacteria. I would clean the sponge regularly in a light bleach solution.
Depending on the mineral content of your water, you may find that it turns white and possibly grows crystals. As the water is driven off, the minerals in the water stay behind (for the most part), leading to the mineral build up. Usually this can be removed by soaking in a product like CLR or Limeaway.
