What should my fiance do if his uvula is normally large and touches his tongue?
He claims that he doesn’t choke on it.
However, I am not sure if these other symptoms are related but,I am concerned that it might be the cause of his loud mouth breathing and his extremely loud snoring. Sometimes he even snores while awake.
When listening to his breathing, it also sounds very fast and shallow. Almost as if he is not breathing into the lower lobe of his lungs. I am not trying to be funny when I make this comparison but, he sounds like Darth Vader when he breathes but faster.
We’ve tried humidifiers, we’ve tried pillows, different positions, breathing exercises.
P.S. we’ve inquired with his physician and we know he does not have asthma.
My guess is the long uvula and soft palate are contributing to the snoring. It probably has zero to do with the depth or speed of his breathing.
I suggest seeing an ENT. ENTs do palate/uvula shortening operations in an attempt to fix the snoring problem.
There is an over-the-counter appliance which frequently helps snoring. He should try one before seeing the ENT. The appliance forces the mandible (lower jaw) forward during sleep in order to widen the airway. Some patients swear by them. I think you’ll find one in the dental aisle at any large drug store.
