Heat Pumps Provide Many Benefits
“What is a heat pump?” is a question that many people ask. The term may well be unfamiliar with people that live outside the United States but the concept is common and found in most homes around the world. Effectively, a heat pump is a heat exchange system which takes warm air from one area and transports it to another area. Most commonly these systems can be seen in air-conditioning units and refrigerators, though, in fact, heat pumps can be both heaters and cooling systems as the systems can be reversed at the flick of a switch.
Heat pumps work by using refrigerants such as propane, butane or hydrofluorocarbons to absorb heat energy and transport it either inside or outside a building. To cool a room, a heat pump will absorb heat from inside a room through a unit acting as an evaporator and then transport it to the outdoor condenser where it is rejected. In heating mode, the device roles are switched and the outdoor unit becomes the evaporator, absorbing heat energy from the outside air, pressurizing it and moving it indoors to the condenser.
If you live in an area of extreme temperatures, such as near the poles or the equator, then the chances are that you will only need one primary usage and a heat pump makes very little sense. This reason is why they are best suited in areas of temperate climates that have equal measures of warm and cool weather. As well as having two primary functions, there are other advantages to fitting a heat pump to your home too.
Heat pumps are one of the most efficient ways of heating and cooling your home, though it is worthy to note that they work slightly better in terms of ‘coefficient of performance’ (COP) in areas of warmer climates. Although their COP drops in cooler climates, they are still more efficient than using an equivalent electric resistance style heater. Better COP means less electricity used and, obviously, cheaper power bills for you.
Electric heat pumps also remove the need for air humidifiers, and can therefore eradicate that ‘dry-air’ feel that is caused by most typical heating systems. Another big advantage to heat pumps is that they work much more quietly than other heating or cooling systems as the compressor unit is situated outside the building – out of earshot. Although the initial outlay for a domestic heat pump will certainly cost you more than a tank of oil, if you research how much money you will save on bills in the future, a heat pump will definitely save you money, and will end up paying for itself in a matter of years.
