dehumidifier vs humidifier?
i live in a basement with ceramic tiles and a gas furnace. i dont know if its dry here in the winter or it is damp. i live in toronto, canada so the winters r long and cold and the furnace will be on all the time. there is no wood furniture. just a big open room close to the cellar and laundry room.i really dont know which to get. your answers r great but they r split? please help again!
I live South of you in the midwest of USA. We have ceramic tile floors (in main level and in basement apartment), cold winters and a gas furnace. If unsure: use dehumidifier in winter only and humidifier in the summer only.
Closed up doors/windows with heat from the furnace will always make dry air whether you live on a main level or basement. You will have more dry nostrils, dry skin and more (the static is a big sign that you need to add air moisture) static electricity in your hair. This means you need to add moisture into the breathing air. If there is frequent or long hot showers or your cooking contains a lot of boiling of water, perhaps that will be enough. Or just add a vaporizer in the room that does not receive the added moisture from bathing & cooking. A humidifier would be beneficial to more main floor living but can be used on low for a basement. The vaporizer may be all you need during the winter months. Should not need during any other season than the winter months. As soon as doors, windows are being opened and furnace off, you stop with the added moisture too.
Many times basements are damp during the rainy seasons and will give that ‘basement smell’ which is a hint of possible mold/mildew starting. Since our basement is sealed well, we do not have to worry about moisture that needs to be removed with a dehumidifier during rainy seasons.
Ceramic floors will be cold year round. Put throw rugs or carpet runner on main walking or standing areas. The tiles are very nice for cleanliness.
