How can I tell if there’s water in my water line?
My condo has a humidifier attached to the furnace with a copper hose running from the humidifier to a water valve located inside the furnace closet. The valve is attached to a metal pipe that runs into the wall (only an inch or so of the pipe is exposed). My humidifier is bone dry inside. I tried turning the valve in both directions, but nothing happens. I’m not sure if this is an issue with the humidifier or if there is no water coming from the pipe. It doesn’t feel like there is water running through the pipe when I touch it, but it’s hard to tell. Is there any way for me to tell (without too much mess) if the valve is hooked up to an active water line?
Furnace humidifiers are famous for drying up. What happens is that they work by evaporation and that leaves a lime deposit. You will probably find the problem is in the float valve. Turn off your household water and remove the copper line at both ends and blow through it to make sure it is not plugged. If it is replace it. Then take the humidifier apart ( its not hard) all you need is a pair of pliers and an adjustable wrench. Soak everything in CLR or vinegar for awhile and clean everything up. You should be able to blow thru the valve when the float is down and when it comes up it will stop the air from coming thru. You may have to replace some parts but they are generally available just take them with you to the hardware store. Another thing is that when they are working perfect they are not very good at all. There are lots of good ones than do not attach to the furnace and provide much better moisture to the air. Good Luck
