My high ouput inline humidifier is not doing better than 30-35% relative humidity?!?
Hi. A while ago, I discovered that the rel humidity in my house is less than 20%. Lots of dryness and other health issues. So I recently had installed a brand new Honeywell inline humidifier (the kind that’s connected to the blower vent). I had it wired in such a way that it can operate independently from the blower itself. The system is the most powerful Home Depot sold. It is rated for homes up to 4,400 sq. ft. My house is only 2,500 sq. ft. so I thought this one would be a sure thing (more power ugh ugh ugh). I set the system on 60% and has had it running for about 6 days non-stop. Result: at best it’s bumped up rel humidity to at most 35%. Well short of the 60% it’s dialed up to. I even set my blower fan to constant on to distribute the humdity and still nothing. What am I doing wrong? What could be wrong. Please help. Thank you.
The first thing I’d do is have a tech come out and verify the installation. You may have made a small, but crucial error that would cause lowered performance. Did you tap a cold wataer line istead of hot? If the unit level? Is the bypass line properly sized?
Your home may need ‘tightening’. Retaining humidity is not the same as retaining heat. Typical fiberglass insulation is transparent to moisture, as are most wall surfaces like sheetrock or plaster. You need vapor barriers to keep moist air from transferring. Unless you are ready to open walls and floors in order to install Tyvek, there is really not much you can do other than making sure your home is as tight as you can get it. Every time you turn on an exhaust fan or open a door on a cold, dry day the humidity level plummets at a rate much faster than the temperature.
To be perfectly honest, 35% relative humidity in a 70 degree home is really quite comfortable. If you start approaching 50% or more you will notice condensation on windows and mold/mildew in closets.
How are you measuring the humidity level? The old-fashioned horsehair gauges are very unreliable, as are most of the humidistats that come with humidifiers. The only way to get an honest, accurate reading is with a sling psychrometer. You’re going to spend upwards of $100 for a good one. If you have a service agreement with a heating company, the tech should take a reading for you just for asking. Otherwise, pay a few bucks just to have someone come out and verify your installation. Can’t hurt, right?
