How to fix shut off valve for humidifier?
There are 2 pipes one with a red faucet valve going out the top of my water heater. The one with the faucet has a small shut off valve with a thing gauge T Handle that is tapped into the pipe to supply the hard copper line to the humidifier in my furnace. It is dripping water from the shaft, and I cannot turn the supply to it off since the red faucet is rusted in place!
Do I turn off the water to the house, and empty the water heater? I am afraid it will spring a bigger leak when unattended. Or just call a plumber, but I was hoping I could DIY this some how.

The packing nut came loose as I went to turn the T Valve, so I tightened it back up carefully but firmly!

If it is dripping water from the valve shaft, tighten the packing nut (link below). That should cure it. It is OK to use a little bit of force – but not a dying strain. Anything from 1/8 to 1/4 turn of the packing nut should do it. Perhaps a little bit more. Do not be surprised when you first move it that it should leak a bit more. That is the packing squeezing down.
The first link is to a packing nut so you understand its position relative to the shaft. The second link is to a saddle-valve (which I suspect you have) so you can see how the packing nut works in the same way.
