Can a moldy filter in my Vicks Humidifier be causing allergies in my house?
I use a Vicks Cool Mist Humidifier in my house to help us breathe better at night when we sleep. But lately my husband and child seem to be sneezing a lot for no reason. Then I discovered that the filter inside was getting moldy or mildewy from the water that goes through it. Could the moldy mildew brown and black gunk on the filter be causing our sneezes? What is that gunk? Is it being blown out when the moisture is blown out? Here is what the humidifer looks like.

Yes, mold spores are a leading allergen. You need to properly disassemble the unit and clean it with a bleach solution to kill the mold spores. Make sure all surfaces are dry completely before putting it back together, and replace the filter.
Don’t leave unused water in the system when you are not using it. Make sure to empty the unit daily and let it air dry when it is not being used.
