Can I use melted snow in my humidifier?
We run a large humidifier at night in the hallway between the bedrooms. We go through about 2-3 gallons of water per night. It doesn’t seem like much, but I hate wasting so much water in it (yes, that sounds cheap, but its more an environmental thing).
Because we live in WI, the land of snow, I keep a clean trash can filled with snow inside the house. As it melts, I run it through a coffee filter to remove debris, and use it to water my plants. Can I use the same melted water in my humidifier?

You can use snow and rain water to fill your humidifier, just use a weak vinegar solution in it every once in a while to keep the calcium from building up. It takes a LOT of snow to melt down to a gallon of water. The reason is that water expands to make snow. Try packing a container with snow and then bringing it inside to warm up. You’ll be surprised at how little water you get.
