Does a guitar humidifier help if I don’t keep my guitar in a case?
I recently bought an acoustic guitar (my third one in twenty years). I have never used a guitar humidifier before but the salesman said it was important. I bought one and am using it but I keep my guitar on a stand not in a case. Does this defeat the purpose of having a humidifier? If I keep the guitar out of its case does the humidifier help? Is there anything I should do (other than store it in the case) for maintenance?
I use a sound hole humidifier (a dampit).
I know how cool it is to keep your acoustic guitar out on a stand. It is after all a beautiful thing to look at for sure. But it should NEVER be done if the humidity in the air is below 40 on a hygrometer. The WORST thing for any acoustic is to dry out. this causes neck warpage, buzzing strings, shrunken tops==which can crack, and a bridge that will actually pull off of the guitar, as well as a warped neck and fret board. When a guitar is properly humidified, it will play better, sound better, and last MUCH longer. I use a hygrometer inside the case, a dampit in the sound hole and one at the head stock especially in winter with dry home heating. I do keep one on the stand, it is a carbon graphite “RainSong guitar which is not made of wood. All my other guitars are kept in the case, and humidified to 45 or 50% as read on the little digital hygrometer. Keeping a solid wood guitar humidified is not a luxury, it is a MUST!
