I am moving from Ottawa to Calgary in March. I have a dozen or so guitars that will be sitting in …?
I am concerned with the guitars sitting in a moving truck for 6-10 days, leaving a province with high humidity to a province with almost no humidity and possible temperature variations. Each has a quality case and I will place sound hole humidifiers in the acoustics, but I’m still very worried about my babies. Any advice would be appreciated.
I really don’t have any other option other than shipping them (5 acoustics, 7 electrics & 1 vintage bass) via air freight, but that would cost a fortune. Perhaps a floater insurance policy??!?
You are quite right to be concerned with such changes in humidity and temperature. I, too, have a guitar and so can relate to your concerns. What I found helped me a lot was to pack styrofoam around my guitar – yes, even in the case itself. It will provide some insulation against the fluctuating temperature/humidity.
There is debate as to whether you would be well advised to de-string your instruments before packing them for shipping. I have heard arguments for and against doing that so that’s a call you can make. I did not de-string my guitar when we moved from Alberta to Ottawa but I did make sure it was well packed and properly insulated.
I attended an outdoor rally recently and, though it was a gorgeous warm winter day, I cringed when the guitar player came on stage and started playing. Others around me also winced at the idea of bringing a string musical instrument outside during the winter.
Since you cannot know for sure precisely how long it will take for your guitars to travel from Ottawa to Calgary your only option is to make things as easy for them as possible.
