Is bacteriostat in humidifier safe for my pregnant wife?
We are having a baby in December, and I just finished cleaning out the humidifier for this winter. I was thinking about the bacteriostat that we add to the tank to keep the air clean from mold/algae. Is this a safe thing to run in the humidifier? With a pregnant wife? I mean, we will be breathing this stuff in when we sleep… Help! Thanks!
Come ON! Has no one wondered this? I think it is just a type of antibacterial soap, and I know it is hardcore diluted, but being in the humidifier we are talking that it is airborne. I mean, I have heard of people putting bleach in there, but I just want to be safe!
Lets begin with reading the label of the bacteriostat that is being used.
Unfortunately most companies are not legally obligated to list all the harmful ingredients in their products- only the warnings.
So keep an eye out for these common toxic ingredients:
Ammonia: Fatal when swallowed
Ammonium Hydroxide: Corrosive, irritant
Bleach: Potentially fatal if ingested
Chlorine: Number one cause of poisonings in children
Formaldehyde: Highly toxic; known carcinogen
Hydrochloric acid: Corrosive, eye and skin irritant
Hydrochloric bleach: Eye, skin and respiratory tract irritant
Lye: Severe damage to stomach and esophagus if ingested
Naphtha: Depresses the central nervous system
Nitrobenzene: Causes skin discoloration, shallow breathing, vomiting, and death
Perchlorethylene: Damages liver, kidney, nervous system
Petroleum Distillates: Highly flammable; suspected carcinogen
Phenol: Extremely dangerous; suspected carcinogen; fatal taken internally
Propylene Glycol: Immunogen; main ingredient in antifreeze
Sodium hypochlorite: Potentially fatal
Sodium laurel sulfate: Carcinogen, toxin, genetic mutagen
Sodium tripolyphosphate: Irritant
Trichloroethane: Damages liver and kidneys
Some of the long-term effects of the chemicals in our cleansers include:
Poisoning
Cancer
Asthma
Hormone imbalance
Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) or environmental illness
Neurological problems

When taking a shower, breathing in the fumes of fluoride and chlorine is more hazardous then drinking the water. When you drink the water your body has time to try and fight off the poisons. Your lungs instantly puts these foreign chemicals in your bloodstream.

Keep in mind that antibacterial soaps are no more beneficial then normal soap. And may be more harmful in the long run. Instead of cleaning or washing away the germs, we now have these antibacterial solutions that try to artificially kill bacteria. There is always that 0.1 percent of bacteria that survive and live to multiply other resistant bacteria.
Humidifiers emit cold mist vaporizers that can breed mold and mildew that can cause asthma and encourage viruses and bacteria.
Change the water every day, and use and clean them according to the manufacturer’s directions.
